Germans played a bluffing game called Pochen as early as the 16th century. Some speculate the first card where painted on leafs. Later, the French brought a poker-like game to New Orleans called Poque, where its popularity spread up the Mississippi on the paddle wheelers. It soon became known by its current name, Poker, and the option for drawing was added during the Civil War. The game then spread via wagon and train. Modifications such as stud poker, the draw, and the straight became popular, European influence of poker ended when the joker was introduced as a wild card in 1875.
