Doyle’s Poker Room Reenters the US Market |
|
| |
Many online poker rooms withdrew their support of US players in the mist of the passage of the UIGEA right as the US market was booming with online poker. The US online poker market saw the fall of the largest player Party Poker and 888. While many rooms decided to stay and wait it all out like Doyle’s Room, Full Tilt Poker, Absolute poker and Ultimate bet. But as time went on the pressure to comply grew. The computer software network they operated with in Tribeca decided this really for them. Doyles Room decided it was in their best interest to not allow US poker players. They took a big blow to their incoming traffic and lost a lot of their poker player to other savvy poker rooms still willing to risk and wait it out.

But either way the Travel channel has decided they are not renewing their contractual option ending April 1, 2007 for season 6 of the World Poker Tour events.

Poker Stars ready to float IPO |
|
| |
After debate in the inner cicle of the PokerStars headquarters, it seems that the online poker room will enter into the financial world sooner rather than later.
It had been rumored earlier this year that the company, jointly owned by Israeli businessman Isai Scheinberg, his family and fellow businessman Pinchas Shapira, were looking to sell their three-quarter ownership of the company. After discussing the option for a few months, the powers that be at what has become the largest poker room in the world have decided to offer their company up as an Initial Public Offering on the London Stock Exchange rather than sell straight out to another entity, according to an article in the London Sunday Times.

partygaming 4th quarter results 1-27-2006
Commenting on today’s announcement, Richard Segal, Chief Executive, said:
“The Group’s strong performance in the final quarter reflected a record number of poker signups,
a seasonal uplift in yield per player in our poker business and the addition of blackjack
on the 8th of October 2005. During the quarter, 44% of active PartyPoker.com players also
played blackjack, which had a substantial and sustained impact on the profitability of the
Group.
“The success of blackjack has transformed our casino business and proved very popular with
a large number of our poker players. Our scale has again proved commercially important.
Through effective cross-selling to our large customer base we are well on the way to creating
the world’s largest online casino.
“PartyGaming’s next major milestone will be the launch of the fully-integrated platform and
shared purse in the first half of 2006. We will also launch two new games, one in the first half
and another in the second half of 2006. By the end of 2006, we will up the ante again by
launching a multi-lingual and multi-currency offering. Marketing a wide range of quality
games to an increasingly international customer base is a core part of our strategy that we
believe will deliver attractive returns for our shareholders.”

More Poker Players Coming To Wireless |
|
| |
With the advent of cellular phones and their advancing technology, what has been
lacking is the content that many would like to have with their mobile phone.
Games are always nice, but what some want are specific ringtones or other
special content that will individualize the experience. While there has been
some poker players that are bringing themselves to the cell phone arena, more
are now joining in.
Sport-Stuff.com announced on November 4th that it had signed three of the biggest names in the poker world to exclusive deals and indicated that there are more to come. Poker legend Men "The Master" Nguyen, 2004 World Series of Poker Championship Event runner-up David Williams and World Poker Tour "Ladies' Night I" runner-up
Evelyn Ng all inked deals that will allow cellphone users to personalize their mobile devices with material from the poker players themselves. Sports-Stuff.com will produce and publish voice ringtones, ringbacks, voicemail greetings and wireless web sites featuring these players.
"Given the meteoric rise in the popularity of poker in the last few years, coupled with the growing demand for exciting wireless content, we felt that creating voice ringtones that featured the stars of the game was an excellent opportunity to capitalize on two growing markets," said Alex Murdoch, Director of Business Development for Sports-Stuff.com. President Kevin Day was also quick to comment on the addition of such a sterling cast. "Having such a talented group of players working closely with us is an exciting opportunity and we plan on taking full advantage of it by creating custom wireless web pages for these players so their many fans can keep up to date on tournament results, public appearances and the like," he added. To take a look at what Sports-Stuff is offering, check out their website at wireless-sport-stuff.com.
It is just another sign of not only the worldwide reach of the game of poker, but also of the marketability of today's poker superstars and the game itself. With Phil Hellmuth having his own poker game on the cellphone market (and with Howard Lederer and Annie Duke heading in that direction), the permeation of poker on television around the world, sponsorships from businesses outside of poker and the continued surge in numbers evident in today's tournament poker world, can the next phase of poker's evolution into a major sport be far behind? reprint Earl Burton poker news |

HollywoodPoker.com Celebrates First Year in
Style
|
|
| |
HollywoodPoker.com celebrated its one-year anniversary last week and so many stars attended it must’ve shut down the industry for the night. The event was held at Hollywood’s Montmartre Lounge, where HollwoodPoker.com’s Vince Van Patten welcomed such celebrity guests as Dennis Quaid, Shannon Elizabeth, Chris Jones, Alana Curry and Katie Lohmann.
The celebs weren’t there only to celebrate the HollywoodPoker.com’s milestone, but also to watch as Van Patten presented checks to the American Red Cross and Quaid’s International Hospital for Children for hurricane relief efforts. The money, which totaled almost $50,000, was raised through charity tournaments online and by a silent auction that evening. People in attendance also got to be the first to see HollywoodPoker.com’s 2006 calendar, featuring winners of a
calendar model search.
To award loyal players, the site will hold two $5,000 freerolls. They’re open to all players who played on the site with real money during the 90 days leading up to Nov. 30. The freerolls will be held Friday, December 2, at 9 p.m. EST and Sunday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. EST.

WPT, Travel Channel Tangle in Lawsuit Over New Show |
|
| |
World Poker Tour Enterprises (WPTE), Inc. has filed suit against the Travel Channel on Monday to stop the home to its wildly popular World Poker Tour from interfering with a developmental deal with a third-party network to air a
show called the Professional Poker Tour (PPT).
The contract WPTE has with the Travel Channel gives the Travel Channel 60 days to decide if it would like to produce poker-related shows WPT Enterprises develops. WPTE claims that it gave the Travel Channel a chance to negotiate for the PPT, but a deal couldn’t be reached within the 60-day exclusive bargaining period.
Although negotiations continued after the 60-day bargaining period, a third network made an offer for the PPT, which WPT Enterprises accepted.
The suit alleges that after WPT Enterprises entered discussions with a third party for the PPT, the Travel Channel sent letters to the third party and WPTE offices asserting that WPT Enterprises broke the broadcasting contract by entering into negotiations with a party other than the Travel Channel.
The suit, filed in California Superior Court, seeks to keep the Travel Channel from interfering with negotiations with the other broadcaster. The contract between the Travel Channel and WPTE gives the Travel Channel 15 days after a deal is reached to match the offer, and the 15-day deadline will expire Sept. 27.

Poker Site Offers Kate Moss Aid |
|
| |
Recently, supermodel Kate Moss was caught snorting cocaine by Daily Mirror photographers. Immediately after the news broke several of her biggest clients, H&M, Burberry, and Chanel, dropped her so fast that it would make any person's head spin. Only cosmetic giant Rimmel, has come out in support of the model, praising the star for issuing an apology immediately after the allegations came to light.
Despite Moss's model contracting losses, she has received a surprise vote of confidence from the poker world. According to a recent article in the Brand Republican, Moss has been offered £5 million to represent poker site Nine.com.
The five-year contract comes with several restrictions that include a brief period in rehab and two months of monitoring by the company's headquarters in Costa Rica, so the company can make sure she isn't taking drugs. Moss will also have to participate in a Nine.com anti-drug campaign aimed at students.
According to Nine.com spokesperson Jack Abrams, Moss is a good fit for the gaming site. "We did a quick focus group with some customers to see if they would be offended in any way and the response was overwhelming," he said.
Whether it is simply for marketing purposes or an honest attempt to help someone get off of drugs, Nine.com's offer is not something the public should disregard. If something like this had been offered to an American sports legend, for example, let's say Dwight Gooden, early intervention might have saved his career.reprint Michael Friedman poker news .com

PokerTek Brings e-Gaming to Card Rooms |
|
| |
Internet Style Poker Making its Way Inside Casinos - PokerTek, a gaming technology company operating in Matthews, North Carolina, is
offering casino and card room customers a new way to play
poker.
PokerTek’s PokerPro table system is a fully-automated poker table that allows players to play a full Texas Hold’em ring game, without the normal casino essentials: cards, chips, or a dealer.
Obviously a kin to online poker, the PokerPro system requires players to go to the casino cage and buy credits on a PokerPro system card. Players then take their card over to a large rectangular table fitted with individual screens where players can see their hole cards, and betting options. The obvious difference between PokerPro and online poker is the fact that with PokerPro players are still face to face with their opponents in the casino environment.
The major advantage for players with the PokerPro system, as with online poker, is that toking is not necessary. For the house, the advantage comes in their ability to run games without paid dealers.
Looking to further cash in on the poker boom, PokerTek is offering an IPO at $10-$12 a share. The expected date is still to be determined, but the company will be listed as PTEK on the Nasdaq.

Poker Power 888.com Set To Go Public 8/05/2005 |
|
| |
THE chief executive of Cassava Enterprises, the Gibraltar-based internet gambling operator behind 888.com, looks set to pocket up to $60 million when the company floats on the London Stock Exchange as early as next month.
The disclosure will re-ignite the issue of corporate rewards in the gambling industry after the huge payouts to the board of PartyGaming, the world’s biggest internet poker company, when it floated in London at the end of June. John Anderson, who also runs Burford, the property group, is understood to be sitting on a potential stake of as much as 4 per cent in Cassava when it pursues an initial public offering (IPO). The IPO, which analysts believe could take place as early as next month, is expected to value the company at more than $1.5 billion . It is tipped to deliver earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) of about $70 million this year. Cassava recently appointed HSBC to advise on its strategic options and the success of PartyGaming’s recent £4.64 billion IPO is expected to provide the impetus for the company to take the same route.
The PartyGaming listing crystallised a 50 million-plus paper fortune for Richard Segal, its chief executive, while even the non-executive directors shared several million pounds.
The biggest winners from Cassava’s IPO will be the two pairs of Israeli brothers who founded the company seven years ago. Avi and Aaron Shaked have a stake of about 70 per cent, while a family trust controlled by Shay and Ron Ben-Yitzhak has about 20 per cent.
Shay Ben-Yitzhak is the only one of the four men involved in the day-to-day running of the business. They set up the business after buying a gaming licence in Antigua for $100,000.
Like PartyGaming, Cassava’s poker and casino websites draw many players from the US, where internet gambling remains a legal grey area, and the issue is bound to attract fresh comment when Cassava lists its shares.
Credit Suisse First Boston, which has been advising Cassava’s shareholders, had been expected to act as adviser to the company but is understood to have decided against such a move over the US legality question. HSBC, which will act as lead underwriter to the issue, is expected to work alongside Numis and Lazard in preparing the company for flotation.
Cassava is only one of several gambling companies considering a listing. Coral Eurobet, the bookmaker, and Gala, the bingo and casino operator, have both appointed advisers to possible listings, while internet-based operators are queuing up to cash in on the interest created by PartyGaming.
While PartyGaming looks set to enter the blue-chip FTSE 100 index next month, Cassava, Coral and Gala are all candidates for the FTSE 250. Cassava said yesterday that it had made no firm decision on an IPO.

Empire Online buys Club Dice, Noble Poker for $40m- 08/04/2005 |
|
| |
Online gambling site operator Empire Online today announced that it has agreed
to acquire the business and assets of Club Dice, together with club Dice's
customer database. Empire Online will also purchase the intellectual property
and brand of Noble Poker. The total consideration for the two platforms is
expected to be approximately $40 million in cash.
Empire Online CEO Noam Lanir said the two platforms operate some of the most highly regarded casino software in the industry, adding, "In Club Dice and Noble Poker we have bought running businesses which achieve a strategic objective of diversifying our base of technology providers.”
Established in 2001, Club Dice comprises three casino brands (Club Dice Casino, MonacoGold Casino, Carnival Casino), and one bingo brand (YouBingo).
The Club Dice database currently comprises over 70,000 registered real money customers.
Empire Online stated should the Club Dice acquisition takes place, the net income multiple paid for the acquisition would represent a significant discount to Empire Online’s current price to earnings ratio.
Both Club Dice and Noble Poker utilize Playtech Ltd. software under license. The acquisition comprises the player database, certain intellectual property, and a license to operate Playtech software across the four Club Dice platforms.
Noble Poker, is the largest poker operator on Playtech's iPoker network. Empire Online will operate the marketing of Noble Poker.
Empire Online believes that the acquisition of Club Dice and Noble Poker will enhance Empire Online's product offering and diversify the company’s technology providers, as well as give the company greater control of its casino product offering through ownership of a gaming license.
Empire Online anticipates that the re-launch of Noble Poker, along with the investment in Empire Online’s backgammon platform, 65.com, will incur costs in the short term, but expect the company’s new platforms to enhance earnings within twelve months.

TILT - ESPN poker series comes to DVD. |
|
| |
ESPN's latest installment of tv series Tilt. ESPN has previously released their films "The Junction Boys" and "3" on DVD, as well as their (by some) acclaimed series "Playmakers". The three DVD box set of "TILT" will hit the streets of your town on June 14th. Retail Priced $49.99, it contains an alternate ending to the first season as well as other bonus material, including outtakes, actor auditions and other deleted scenes from the filming of the series.
TILT" was written by the men who brought us "Rounders", and it seemed that they included every other seedy poker cliche that they missed in that classic movie. It featured Michael Madsen (Kill Bill, Vol. 2) as poker champion Don "The Matador" Everest who, by outplaying or straight out cheating, is the king of the hill at the Colorado Casino in Las Vegas. Gunning for him are three young hotshots that, at one time in their young lives or another, have been at the receiving end of "The Matador" and his shenanigans.
Though TILT should be rented at your local video store instead of buying. It was not well received by the poker community or the general public. Pokernews

Hellmuth Announces poker camp - 4/20/05 |
|
| |
People have watched him win the World Series of Poker World Championship at the tender age of 24. They have bought his books by the millions. When he is at the table, either winning or losing, he is the center of attention. And, to warm up for the coming WSOP, he recently captured the National Heads Up Poker Championship in March. All in all, it is good to be Phil Hellmuth.
So you want to be like Phil? You will have the opportunity if your skills (and your bankroll) are deep enough. Coming in August, "Camp Hellmuth" will blow the whistle and get your poker skills in top shape. Billed as "The Ultimate Weekend Of Poker," it is a highly intensive four day training camp to be conducted at Binion's Horseshoe Casino, the legendary downtown Las Vegas home of the World Series, from August 18-21.
All of this information does not come without a price. While some poker players will gasp at the $3,499 price tag for the fantasy camp, there are several specials that can chop some of that money off. If you sign up for the camp prior to June 1st, for example, $150 is taken off the bill. There are other discounts if you do not need the accommodations of Caesars' (which are included in the $3,499) or if you bring a friend along with you. Additionally, the total does not need to be paid up front. You can reserve your spot with a deposit of $1,499, with the balance due by June 15th.
While it may seem to be an expensive trip, it may very well turn you into the next Phil Hellmuth! For more information on Camp Hellmuth, be sure to check out the website, camphellmuth.com, or dial up 1-866-HELLMUTH to learn more about what would be a great way to spend four days in Las Vegas! TDMA). So far, the company hasn't specified whether any US mobile phone carriers
will serve the new opportunity.
"Portable poker is a natural evolution for what is fast becoming the nation's cult game." Notes Patrik Selin, CEO of Poker Room. "You can play over your handset anywhere, anytime.
Poker Rooms software offers three viewing options, including "normal view," which resembles PokerRoom's web site, "symbol view," providing a view of the entire table, and "text view," which gives players access to the history of how a given hand was played. The mobile poker platform also includes a chat feature, which allows players to send texts during the game. |

Lederer and Lindgren get a New Sponsor 4/05/05 |
|
| |
Top professional players Erick Lindgren, and Howard "The Professor" Lederer have signed a sponsorship deal with Knob Creek, a top selling brand or Bourbon.
The one-year deal will see Lindgren and Lederer endorsing Knob Creek at World Poker Tour, and World Series events.
"This is an important sponsorship for Erick and me, as well as for the whole sport of poker," says Lederer, "Having a well-known brand like Knob Creek endorse us adds credibility to our growing sport. I believe Texas Hold 'Em Poker and Knob Creek Bourbon make a winning pair."
This sponsorship marks yet another milestone in the growth and acceptance of poker into the mainstream. This is the first major endorsement from a mainstream company of poker players, and hopefully will be the first of many of these types of deals.
In addition to launching this sponsorship, Knob Creek (part of the Jim Beam family of brands) is launching something called the "Drink Smart, Play Smart" program, which encourages both responsible drinking, and responsible gaming.
"When Knob Creek asked me to represent them, I was very enthusiastic. It's a terrific opportunity to leverage our sport in the national arena." Says Lindgren
Still, this endorsement does raise an interesting point. Both Lederer, and Lindgren are part of Team Full Tilt, and integral part of Full Tilt's marketing push. The way the announcement is written, it appears that both players will continue to represent Full Tilt in events other than WPT, or WSOP events. The deal is interesting also in the sense that neither player will be able to wear a Knob Creek logo should they make the final table of a WPT event (unless the rules are changed).
Still, for those of us who root for the game of poker this should be a cause for celebration, and not speculation. Let this sponsorship be the guide for corporations all over the US who see the appeal, and value in deals like this, but are gun shy to enter into agreements for fear of the reaction of conservatives in this country, not to mention their own shareholders.

Jennifer Harman back with a fury 04/01/05 |
|
| |
When discussion of the best female player in the game warms up, there are your usual list of candidates: Liebert, Duke, Tran, Enright, and many others. Another name that many come up with, and for a well deserved reason, is Jennifer Harman. Harman has for years been a force in the cash games, even winning the largest pot ever contested ($1.7 million) in such a game. She is also one of the few women who have broke through the male ranks to win a World Series of Poker bracelet, and she has done it twice.
2004, however, was a year of tremendous struggle. Jennifer missed the World Series because she was waiting for a kidney transplant. She could not commit to the Series, mostly because of her health, but also because the life saving operation could come at any time. After the donation of a kidney from her niece and a successful operation, Jennifer quickly regained her form to be at the final table of the 2004 Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December as a combatant, not a railbird. She also received what has to be the ultimate compliment; when Doyle Brunson went for the authors of the sections of "Super/System 2," he tapped Jennifer to write the Limit section of the book.
