  Mobile Poker Phone - 4/08/05
PokerRoom.com is taking its popular Texas Hold 'Em game on the move with the introduction of the first ever interactive, real money mobile phone poker, launching April 2005. We all knew that the game we all love would go mobile is was just a matter of time. Poker Room is the first to announce a fully interactive mobile poker phone, thought now just is beta testing mode. However, the service first will be suitable for one model only - Sony/Ericsson K770i, the other models will be served shortly thereafter.

The application has been geared to reconcile with a network supporting GPRS, and a service provider who runs a certain kind of mobile application (GSM, WCDMA, TDMA). So far, the company hasn't specified whether any US mobile phone carriers will serve the new opportunity.

"Portable poker is a natural evolution for what is fast becoming the nation's cult game." Notes Patrik Selin, CEO of Poker Room. "You can play over your handset anywhere, anytime.

Poker Rooms software offers three viewing options, including "normal view," which resembles PokerRoom's web site, "symbol view," providing a view of the entire table, and "text view," which gives players access to the history of how a given hand was played. The mobile poker platform also includes a chat feature, which allows players to send texts during the game.

Lederer and Lindgren get a New Sponsor 4/05/05
Top professional players Erick Lindgren, and Howard "The Professor" Lederer have signed a sponsorship deal with Knob Creek, a top selling brand or Bourbon.

The one-year deal will see Lindgren and Lederer endorsing Knob Creek at World Poker Tour, and World Series events.

"This is an important sponsorship for Erick and me, as well as for the whole sport of poker," says Lederer, "Having a well-known brand like Knob Creek endorse us adds credibility to our growing sport. I believe Texas Hold 'Em Poker and Knob Creek Bourbon make a winning pair."

This sponsorship marks yet another milestone in the growth and acceptance of poker into the mainstream. This is the first major endorsement from a mainstream company of poker players, and hopefully will be the first of many of these types of deals.

In addition to launching this sponsorship, Knob Creek (part of the Jim Beam family of brands) is launching something called the "Drink Smart, Play Smart" program, which encourages both responsible drinking, and responsible gaming.

"When Knob Creek asked me to represent them, I was very enthusiastic. It's a terrific opportunity to leverage our sport in the national arena." Says Lindgren

Still, this endorsement does raise an interesting point. Both Lederer, and Lindgren are part of Team Full Tilt, and integral part of Full Tilt's marketing push. The way the announcement is written, it appears that both players will continue to represent Full Tilt in events other than WPT, or WSOP events. The deal is interesting also in the sense that neither player will be able to wear a Knob Creek logo should they make the final table of a WPT event (unless the rules are changed).

Still, for those of us who root for the game of poker this should be a cause for celebration, and not speculation. Let this sponsorship be the guide for corporations all over the US who see the appeal, and value in deals like this, but are gun shy to enter into agreements for fear of the reaction of conservatives in this country, not to mention their own shareholders.

Jennifer Harman back with a fury 04/01/05
When discussion of the best female player in the game warms up, there are your usual list of candidates: Liebert, Duke, Tran, Enright, and many others. Another name that many come up with, and for a well deserved reason, is Jennifer Harman. Harman has for years been a force in the cash games, even winning the largest pot ever contested ($1.7 million) in such a game. She is also one of the few women who have broke through the male ranks to win a World Series of Poker bracelet, and she has done it twice.

2004, however, was a year of tremendous struggle. Jennifer missed the World Series because she was waiting for a kidney transplant. She could not commit to the Series, mostly because of her health, but also because the life saving operation could come at any time. After the donation of a kidney from her niece and a successful operation, Jennifer quickly regained her form to be at the final table of the 2004 Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December as a combatant, not a railbird. She also received what has to be the ultimate compliment; when Doyle Brunson went for the authors of the sections of "Super/System 2," he tapped Jennifer to write the Limit section of the book.
